Air traffic was jammed and hotels were full in the US city of Detroit on Monday when more than 3,000 business representatives flocked in for the Gateway '17 conference, Aibaba's biggest-ever public event, in the United States.
Gateway:
China-based e-commerce colossus Alibaba just held its first signature U.S. event, Gateway 17, at which I had the privilege of presenting and participating. They hosted a crowd of 3,000+ retailers, manufacturers, service providers, and others in, or aspiring to be in, that glorious China e-commerce ecosystem.
This June 21-22 gathering was part cheerleading, part religious revival and part personal story, all combined with a whole lot of practical tips, advice, insight, coaching and matchmaking.
China's leading entrepreneur, Jack Ma, offered heavy doses of rags-to-riches inspiration and exhortations to embrace free trade and globalization during his keynote speech at Cobo Center.
"Small business, you have nothing to lose," Ma exhorted his roughly 3,000 listeners. "The only thing you have to lose is the opportunity. Lose the hope, lose the future."
Along with the inspiration he sprinkled some startling statistics: That the Alibaba platform recently sold 2 million lipsticks in 10 minutes, or that when the site first started selling live Canadian lobsters for delivery to China, they sold nearly 100,000 immediately, enough to shut down the supply.
"Don't miss this chance. Embrace the change. See the future. Change yourself."
Ma said Alibaba picked Detroit for the conference because the Midwest has a lot of small businesses, particularly those providing various food products that could please Chinese consumers.
His goal, he said, is to allow consumers anywhere to buy products from anywhere in the world — salmon from Norway, coconuts from Thailand — and receive them within 72 hours.
However, in the last 30+ years of China’s rise and commercial opening, the promise of selling to Chinese consumers has largely been the province of large, global brands – companies who have had the financial foundations to establish manufacturing, distribution, and marketing operations in China.
Today, Alibaba is changing the game by “democratizing” access to the Chinese market. So, whether you are a global corporate brand, a small network of stores and distribution points, or an extremely small, solo-practitioner entrepreneur marketing an interesting and innovative product, Alibaba’s interfaces allow you to achieve a huge impact with Chinese consumers in a way that was heretofore impossible.
Some of the small businesses at the conference seemed a little daunted.
Gee said the Alibaba conference opened his eyes to the possibility in China, as well as to “how complex an opportunity it is.” There’s “just so much to navigate,” he said, with details to figure out regarding “international trademarks, copyrights, all these different pieces of our business that I hadn’t really thought of as a small-business owner.”
At the end of the conference, Gee was still open to exploring Alibaba, just not immediately.
Timeless is not aiming to conquer China. “If you are able to tap 1 percent of the Chinese market, you’re in business,” Pedersen says.
Timeless(产品名)的目标不是征服中国。
To be sure, Jack Ma held the “star role” at the conference, expounding on the history of Alibaba’s evolution and his “philosophy” of how enterprises can grow and thrive in the new economy.
In China, Jack’s wisdom is the topic of countless books and videos that aspiring entrepreneurs study as they build their own enterprises, and his simply-worded knowledge is neither superficial nor hollow.
Jack’s soundbites are genuinely worthy of collection, reflection, and integration into business growth and enterprise organizational planning.
Question: What do you get when a teacher of modest origins envisions, develops, and leads an e-commerce behemoth with $500 billion in annual sales (projected to surpass $1 trillion by 2020) that dominates the most populous country in the world??
Answer: A unique “classroom” to study e-business growth and innovation strategies to tap the “exploding” consumer marketplace in China.
Almost 20 years after he left Hangzhou Teacher’s College, he is still the lecturer, still the teacher: friendly, but with a tone that makes you take notes as he talks to you. Aspirational, but with one eye on the downside. On fire with drive, but with a cool, controlled demeanor.

Ma has a knack for aphorisms and pithy phrases, all the more impressive since he is doing this in his second language.
Even today, most times when we have failed, when we did not achieve something, I say, ‘Well, get used to it.’ We are the people who have to learn and get used to being rejected, and get used to the days when nobody comes to help or support us. We shall not get used to being successful. When we succeed at something, we always feel proud, honored and thankful.
The reason we do that is not because we are experts of the internet. It is not because we are smart. We are not smart people. But we are very optimistic. We believe in the future. We believe in the internet. We believe that if we do not succeed, somebody else will.
Entrepreneurs believe every day is difficult. Today is difficult. Tomorrow is much more difficult. They believe the day after tomorrow is very beautiful. But most people die tomorrow evening. You don't work hard, you don't see the sunshine.
The book I want to write one day is about Alibaba's 1,001 mistakes. We made so many mistakes. And the mistakes that we learned from are the best assets we have.
We will never say that we have succeeded. I think most people here have the same feeling. When you have a feeling of success, problems come.
If they don't have the vision for the future, it's difficult for a team to have teamwork. Do not hire people for you to work. Hire people to work for the vision you agree on together.
Everything you do, you should love it. If you do not like the things you are doing, your life is in trouble.
Where is the opportunity? Opportunity always exists in the places where people complain.
If America is a country on wheels, China today is a country on the internet or on mobile phones.
If you lose China, if you lose developing countries in Asia, if you lose internet e-commerce, you will lose hope and you will lose the future.
